Housing Surge Helps End Homelessness for Veterans
On December 16th, the New England Center and Home for Veterans hosted a housing surge with public and nonprofit agencies to assist Veterans struggling with homelessness. This housing surge was held as part of Mayor Martin Walsh’s Boston Homes for the Brave initiative, an effort to end chronic Veteran homelessness in Boston. It offered Veterans the opportunity to get rental assistance vouchers and to learn about additional benefits and support services they may be entitled to, such as job training and medical benefits.
Since the initiative began in July 2014, the City has been able to find permanent housing for 500 Veterans, a milestone that was celebrated as part of the Prudential Center’s 31 Nights of Light program. Housing surges like NECHV’s are an important part of the solution to end Veteran homelessness.
